Outdoor essentials according to camping MB:
- Pocketknife
- First aid kit
- Extra Clothing and rain gear (itemized below)
- Water bottle
- Flashlight
- Trail food
- Matches and fire starters (hot spark kit is good for non-wood fires)
- Sun protection
- Map and compass
Additional recommended "regular" (car-) campout items:
- tent (including stakes)
- groundcloth (tarp) or "footprint"
- sleeping bag (appropriate for climate) and pad
- beanie (especially for cold weather)
- insect repellant
- toilet paper
- shoestrings and or nylon cord
- extra water bottle(s) (depends on terrain)
- pack cover (large garbage bag) in case it rains
- mess (plate and or sierra cup, spoon and or fork) (most Scouts just use a Sierra cup and unbreakable plastic spoon)
- Scout handbook
- pen and paper
- rain poncho
- heavy jacket
- sweatshirt
- changes of clothes (especially socks)
- bathing suit (if appropriate)
- hat (or cap)
