Outdoor essentials according to camping MB:

  • Pocketknife
  • First aid kit
  • Extra Clothing and rain gear (itemized below)
  • Water bottle
  • Flashlight
  • Trail food
  • Matches and fire starters
  • Sun protection
  • Map and compass

Additional recommended "regular" campout items:

  • tent (including stakes)
  • groundcloth (tarp) or "footprint"
  • sleeping bag (appropriate for climate) and pad
  • beanie (especially for cold weather)
  • spaceblanket (optional, but good for emergency)
  • insect repellant
  • toilet paper
  • hot-spark kit
  • shoestrings and or nylon cord
  • extra water bottle(s) (depends on terrain)
  • pack cover (large garbage bag) in case it rains
  • mess (plate and or sierra cup, spoon and or fork) (most Scouts just use a Sierra cup and spork)
  • Scout handbook
  • pen and paper
  • rain poncho
  • heavy jacket
  • sweatshirt
  • changes of clothes (especially socks)
  • bathing suit (if appropriate)
