First Class Req. 2: "Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.)"

Abbreviations:

• SD = "short distance"
• D = degrees
• MBO = "may be obscured"

Notes:

• In the Course, vehicle gates are always the swivel side.
• There are occasional "check steps" to make sure you're on the right track. Do not go to these. Just check to make sure you're in the right place.
• Do not jump fences.
• Watch out for traffic and ball games. If there is a baseball game going on, spot your target and then walk around to it. Do not interfere with a game!

A very short distance southwest from the Sycamore group picnic area (GPA) is a tall light pole. This course (OC2) begins there.

• In the distance there is a tall light pole at 160 degrees (160D). Go to it. This is the beginning of Segment A.
• In the distance there is a tall light pole at 220D. Go to it. This is the beginning of Segment B.
• In the distance there is a tall light pole at 80D. Go to it. This is the beginning of Segment C.
• In the distance there is a tall light pole at 125D. Go to it. This is the beginning of Segment D.

Before proceeding to your patrol's assigned segment, estimate the height of the tall light pole.

Segment A

• 85D sign. (At 85D there is a sign. Go to that sign.)
• 180D streetlight.
• Check: The amphitheater should be due west.
• 155D Milias GPA sign.
• 40D bench.
• 320D first light pole MBO.
• Check: backstop at 240D.
• 50D big tree.
• 310D light pole.
• 300D light pole.
• 225D light pole.

Segment B

• 340D SD light pole. (At 340 degrees there is a light pole a short distance away. Go to it.)
• Estimate the height of this light pole.
• 0D SD large tree.
• 230D light pole.
• Check: horseshoe pit at 110D.
• 25D SD flagpole.
• 245D structure pole.
• 355D center of backstop.
• 0D palm tree by shed.
• 55D kiosk.
• 155D Walnut GPA sign.
• 60D electric pole.
• 185D SD big tree.
• 135D black light-pole.
• 95D light pole.

Segment C

• 305D wooden pole MBO. (At 305 degrees there is a wooden pole. Go to it.)
• 295D light pole.
• 300D vehicle gate.
• 305D stop sign.
• The next segment crosses Miller Ave.; be careful, WATCH FOR TRAFFIC.
• Cross the street at 280D. Stand in the center of the entrance to a pathway.
• 290D fire hydrant.
• 175D electric pole.

• Check: There is a baseball backstop at325D.
• 90D vehicle gate.
• Cross Miller Ave. carefully.
• 200D to first light pole.
• 200D for 14 yards more; should be at fence end.

Segment D

• Check: You should be right next to bleachers.

• 70D yellow traffic sign.
• 160D Creekside PA sign.
• 250D vehicle gate.
• 235D SD tree.
• 285D tree near hill side.
• 0D black light-pole.
• Check: picnic table at 265D.
• 270D tree SD.
• 245D closer light pole.
• Check: Should be next to baseball outfield fence.
