Personal First-Aid Kit

The Boy Scout Handbook recommends that personal first aid kits include:

  • Adhesive bandages 6
  • Sterile gauze pads, 4-by-4-inch 2
  • Adhesive tape 1 small roll
  • Moleskin, 3-by-6-inch 1
  • Soap or alcohol-based hand sanitizing gel 1 small bar or travel-sized bottle
  • Antibiotic ointment (Bacitracin) 1 small tube
  • Scissors 1 pair
  • Tweezers 1 pair
  • Disposable non-latex gloves 1 pair (Use medical gloves from your first aid kit to protect yourself whenever first aid emergencies involve blood or other body fluids.)
  • Mouth-barrier device for rescue breathing 1
  • Pencil and paper 1

Demonstrate how to care for someone who is choking.

Show first aid for the following:

  • Simple cuts and scrapes
  • Blisters on the hand and foot
  • Minor (thermal/heat) burns or scalds (superficial, or first degree)
  • Bites and stings of insects and ticks
  • Venomous snakebite
  • Nosebleed
  • Frostbite and sunburn

Second Class Req. 7

a. Show what to do for "hurry" cases of stopped breathing, serious bleeding, and ingested poisoning.

b. Prepare a personal first aid kit to take with you on a hike.

c. Demonstrate first aid for the following:

  • Object in the eye
  • Bite of a suspected rabid animal
  • Puncture wounds from a splinter, nail, and fishhook
  • Serious burns (partial thickness, or second degree)
  • Heat exhaustion
  • Shock
  • Heatstroke, dehydration, hypothermia, and hyperventilation

First Class Req. 8

a. Demonstrate tying the bowline knot and describe several ways it can be used.

b. Demonstrate bandages for a sprained ankle. and for injuries on the head, the upper arm, and the collarbone.

c. Show how to transport by yourself, and with one other person, a person:

  • from a smoke-filled room
  • with a sprained ankle, for at least 25 yards.

d. Tell the five most common signals of a heart attack. Explain the steps (procedures) in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
